Femke Bol was voted Athlete of the Year at the Athletics Union gala. She received the most votes from the public and the jury. Earlier this year, De Amersfoortse was named Europe’s Best Athlete 2022.

Bol won the election over Jessica Schilder and Nienke Brinkman, the other two athletes on the shortlist. She succeeds Sifan Hassan, who was chosen as the best Dutch athlete of the year for the previous three years.

Bol, 22, had a particularly successful year. She won silver at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in the 400 meters, followed by silver in the 400 meters hurdles at the World Outdoor Championships in Eugene. She then delivered a unique performance at the European Championships in Munich with gold in the 400 meters flat and the 400 meters hurdles. She won the 400 meters with a Dutch record 49.44 seconds. She also won gold with the 4×400 meter relay team. Bol ended the year with the overall victory in the Diamond League over 400 hurdles.

Dutch record at the Rotterdam Marathon

Schilder, 23, has risen to the top of the world in the shot put this year. She has bettered the Dutch record each time since her first competition, won bronze at the World Indoor Championships, bronze at the World Outdoor Championships and became European champion with a shot over 20 meters ( 20.24 meters).

Brinkman (29) was the Dutch marathon sensation. She ran the Rotterdam Marathon in the spring with a Dutch record of 2:22:51 and won bronze at the European Championships in Munich. She was also crowned the world’s best trail runner in Madeira this fall.
